"He's a legend in Montreal, and it's a great honor to pass guys like him because you know you have done some good things in this league," Selanne said. "Things like this are just a bonus for myself. Obviously, I'm very lucky and thankful for how my career has gone."

He told the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper in Finland that a man his age doesn't belong in the NHL. Selanne recently contemplated retirement but decided to play for one more season. The Finnish-born Selanne entered the NHL in 1992 at age 22 with the Winnipeg Jets. He has 614 goals for Winnipeg, San Jose, Colorado and Anaheim.

The team says Selanne told Ducks general manager Bob Murray of his decision on Saturday. Analysis: The Finnish-born Selanne has played 10 of his 17 NHL seasons with Anaheim and was signed for the 2009-2010 season. He is the Ducks' all-time scoring leader with 352 goals, including 59 game-winners, and 743 points. Anaheim was eliminated by Detroit in the second round of this season's playoffs.
